What is Tabata Training?

Tabata training is an interval training program that has been scientifically proven to help increase cardiovascular endurance and muscle performance.

How does Tabata Training work?

Tabata sessions consist of short maximum-exertion training intervals followed by even shorter recovery periods. Most Tabata workouts consist of 20-seconds-on, 10-seconds-off intervals repeating the circuit eight times for a one four-minute Tabata. You can stop there or do more Tabatas for a more intense sweat session.

What is the science behind Tabata Training?

Tabata training was discovered by Japanese scientist Dr. Izumi Tabata and his research team in 1996. He found that athletes who performed intense, four-minute interval workouts increased their aerobic and anaerobic capacity more than athletes following other protocols. They also experienced greater metabolism boosts.

Is HIIT (high intensity interval training) the same as a Tabata Training?

Not exactly. HIIT encompasses all sorts of high-intensity, interval-based workouts. For example, a typical HIIT workout might have intervals of one minute on and one minute off for a duration of 30 minutes of complete work. Tabata, however, is really just one type of HIIT workout. Often Tabata is actually higher in intensity than HIIT due to its very short work intervals and even shorter periods of rests.

Does Tabata Training support weight loss?

Absolutely! Tabata is a super effective type of exercise to support weight loss. Since Tabata is performed with such high intensity, your metabolism and heart rate increase immediately. Tabata Training helps burn more calories both during and after your workout which allows the body to use up any excess fat it is storing. This means that adding Tabata workouts to your fitness routine is an optimal way to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, which is the healthiest form of weight management.

How do I get started with Tabata Training?

Joining my daily fitness classes! I incorporate Tabata Training into my 45-minute classes. The sessions are super intense and you will feel the burn. Circuits include plyometric movements like burpees, jumping jacks, lunges and mountain climbers along with body-toning moves like push-ups, crunches and dips. I also use weights for squats, curls and presses to target specific muscle groups.

I look forward to see you in my next Tabata session!
